Miriam is an Agricultural Scientist with a wealth of experience in practical livestock management and a career working to improve animal handling and slaughter methods.Livestockwise (est. 2000) provides specialist advice in the area of animal handling and slaughter. Clients range from major retailers to slaughter plants farmers and national governments and trade sector bodies to NGO’s. Miriam has also travelled widely and worked with livestock farmers and handlers in India, Mongolia, China, Brazil and Indonesia to name a few. In 2006 Miriam was awarded an MBE for services to farming. Her work is influenced by her friend, US animal behaviourist Temple Grandin.

Ty Coch is a mixed farming enterprise farmed by Nigel Bowyer and his family, and is made up of a flock of 260 ewes and 70 growing and fattening cattle along with 30 acres of arable ground, growing a mix of cereals and maize as home-grown forage for cattle. OPTIMISING FERTILITY: MANAGING THE DAIRY COW FROM DRYING OFF TO SUBMI
Lean about preparation of the cow prior to her calving and in the immediate few weeks post calving will have massive effects on her subsequent fertility. Good management of transitioning cow sets her up for a successful lactation. Ideally after she has calved, she should have a low risk of metabolic disease, limited change in BCS and her uterus quickly return to full health in order to accept the next pregnancy.
