Animal Welfare Act - Section 9


Duty of person responsible for animal to ensure welfare

(1)  A person commits an offence if he does not take such steps as are reasonable in all the circumstances to ensure that the needs of an animal for which he is responsible are met to the extent required by good practice.

(2)  For the purposes of this Act, an animal's needs shall be taken to include —

(a)  its need for a suitable environment,

(b)  its need for a suitable diet,

(c)  its need to be able to exhibit normal behaviour patterns,

(d)  any need it has to be housed with, or apart from, other animals, and

(e)  its need to be protected from pain, suffering, injury and disease.

(3)  The circumstances to which it is relevant to have regard when applying subsection (1) include, in particular —

(a)  any lawful purpose for which the animal is kept, and

(b)  any lawful activity undertaken in relation to the animal.

(4)  Nothing in this section applies to the destruction of an animal in an appropriate and humane manner.

NADIS

NADIS (The National Animal Disease Information Service) was formed by livestock vets in 1995 to promote animal health and welfare through improved disease prevention delivered by active veterinary health planning.  We are a team of vets across the UK working closely with vets in practice and RAMAs in industry to help them achieve this with farmers.

Farming Connect

Farming Connect is one of four new schemes within the Welsh Government Rural Communities - Rural Development Programme 2014-2020, which is focusing significant investment from Welsh Government and the EU to revitalise rural communities and provide support for agriculture and forestry in Wales.

Farming Community Network

We have a network of over 400 volunteers across England and Wales, many of whom are involved in farming, or have close links with agriculture, and therefore have a great understanding of the issues that farmers, farm workers and farming families regularly face. Our volunteers provide free, confidential, pastoral and practical support to anyone who seeks help, regardless of whether the issue is personal or business-related. 

 

In addition to local groups of volunteers, FCN runs a confidential national helpline (03000 111 999) and e-helpline (help@fcn.org.uk) which is open every day of the year from 7am-11pm.

The DPJ Foundation

The DPJ Foundation was set up in July 2016 in Pembrokeshire, supporting those in the agricultural sector. The mental health farming charity has grown and covers the whole of Wales with all areas of support. The DPJ Foundation works with leading organisations in agriculture including NFU Cymru, FUW, YFC, vets and Welsh Government to help provide an accessible and flexible service.

ADHB

We are the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB). Our purpose is to inspire our farmers, growers and industry to succeed in a rapidly changing world. We equip the industry with easy to use, practical know-how, which they can apply straight away to make better decisions and improve their performance. AHDB is a statutory levy board and is funded by farmers, growers and others in the supply chain.

RABI

The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (RABI) are a national charity that provides local support to the farming community across England and Wales.   Established in 1860, we have been offering guidance, financial support and practical care to farming people of all ages for generations.

 

Red Tractor

Founded in 2000, Red Tractor is a world-leading food chain assurance scheme that underpins the high standards of British food & drink. We are the flagship logo of British food and farming, providing assurance at every stage of the production process, from farm to pack.

RSPCA

We're the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) and we've been here for animals since 1824. We're the world's oldest and largest animal welfare charity, with the primary focus of rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming or releasing animals across England and Wales. We have rehoming centres, wildlife rehabilitators and animal hospitals which are funded by donations to the national RSPCA, as well as our local branches. These separately-registered charities work under guidelines set by the national RSPCA and are primarily funded by local donors.

ARWAIN DGC

Arwain DGC is focussed on developing shared visions of reducing the need for antimicrobials through diverse approaches and practices including the use of new and innovative technology. It also aims to develop a collaborative approach to address antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in animals and the environment.

NFU

For more than 110 years we've been representing British farmers and growers. We're committed to doing that for 100 more. We are proud to be the voice of British farming, ensuring our members are heard when and where it matters most.

Welsh Lamb and Beef Producers

Welsh Lamb and Beef Producers Ltd (WLBP) is a farmer-controlled agricultural cooperative society with over 7,400 members. WLBP owns the Farm Assured Welsh Livestock Scheme (FAWL) and encourages its members to look after the environment and to participate in animal health and welfare planning schemes that are being developed all the time. A bespoke Farm Records and Animal Health Plan website have been developed to enable members to maintain accurate and up to date records of animal management. The FAWL scheme is also recognised by Assured Food Standards and its members’ farms can market their produce under the banner of the Red Tractor Scheme.
